Rolex Submariner Buying Guide: Which Reference Is Right for You?
The Submariner is the most recognizable watch in the world. But with decades of references, knowing which one to buy takes some homework.
Read ArticlePatek Philippe occupies a unique position in watchmaking. No other brand has maintained consistent output quality, in-house movement development, and collector appeal across such a long history. Their advertising slogan — "You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation" — is not just marketing; it reflects the fact that well-maintained Pateks genuinely tend to hold and appreciate in value over decades. For a first-time buyer, the pre-owned market offers access to references that are unavailable new, at prices that sometimes represent better long-term value than retail.
The Calatrava is Patek's foundational dress watch — round, clean, time-only or with a small seconds subdial. References like the 5196, 5227, and the vintage 3520 have defined the look of the classic Swiss dress watch for generations. For a first Patek buyer who wants to understand the brand's DNA without navigating sports-watch premiums, a pre-owned Calatrava in steel or yellow gold is the logical starting point. These watches are supremely wearable, age beautifully, and are available across a wide price range depending on reference and era.
The Nautilus and Aquanaut are among the most coveted watches in the world. Designed by Gérald Genta in 1976, the original Nautilus (reference 3700) started an entirely new category of luxury sports watch. The modern reference 5711 — produced from 2006 until its discontinuation in 2022 — became the definitive version of that vision, and pre-owned examples in stainless steel now regularly transact in the $90,000–$110,000 range for a watch that retailed under $35,000 new, roughly three times its original retail price. Patek has since replaced it with the 5811, produced in white gold and carrying a significantly higher retail price. The Aquanaut (references 5167 and 5168) is somewhat more accessible but follows similar market dynamics. For first-time buyers, these references are outstanding long-term holds if purchased at the right price, but require genuine market knowledge and patience to execute well. Do not buy speculatively without a clear understanding of current conditions.
Patek's annual calendar complication (references 5035, 5036, 5396) requires only one manual correction per year — at the end of February — and represents one of the most practical complications in watchmaking. Pre-owned annual calendar Pateks represent strong value in the $15,000–$30,000 range. Chronograph references (5170, 5204) are more complicated mechanically and correspondingly rarer and more expensive, but offer exceptional craftsmanship that is tangible in daily use.
Patek Philippe maintains archive records for their movements. For any significant purchase, an Extract from the Patek Philippe Archives (a paid service) will confirm the movement number, case material, dial configuration, and delivery date. This is the gold standard of Patek provenance verification and is worth the modest cost for any five-figure purchase. Beyond the archive, all the standard authentication steps apply: movement examination, case quality, dial printing, and bracelet or strap condition. Patek's movements are among the finest in the world — a genuine Caliber 240 or 324 is unmistakable to anyone who has examined one.
Patek Philippe's Official After-Sales Service is exceptional but carries long turnaround times — often six to twelve months for a full service — and costs that reflect the watches' value. For pre-owned buyers, a recent Patek-stamped service document is meaningful documentation. Independent service from a qualified watchmaker is acceptable for routine maintenance, but Patek's internal service is the standard for restoration. When evaluating a pre-owned Patek, note that unpolished cases are strongly preferred — the brand's chamfered and anglaged surfaces are a core part of the watch's aesthetic, and aggressive polishing removes material that cannot be restored.
